Don't fear AI, take charge of it
SuperOps CEO Arvind Parthiban on why automation raises the value of IT professionals, and why the community should take hold of AI rather than brace for it.
AI is all anyone talks about right now, and most of that talk is about what it will do to us. What it means for our jobs, our teams, the whole ecosystem we've built. Those are fair questions, but that's only one way to look at it. I would rather focus my energies on thinking about what we can do with AI.
The same technology that feels like a threat from one angle is, from another, the biggest chance we've had in years to do our work better. Two people can sit in front of the same tool on the same morning. One sees a list of tasks that might disappear. The other sees hours handed back, time for the projects that have been stuck in the backlog for a year. Which one it becomes depends less on the tools and more on how we choose to meet them.
There's a real fear going around that automated IT means IT people are on the way out. I'm certain that it's quite the opposite. When the routine runs itself (the patch cycles, the password resets), the work that's left is the work only people can do. That raises the value of solid IT professionals, rather than erasing it. Automation takes over tasks. It doesn't take over responsibility, and responsibility is where IT has always earned its place.
So here's what I want to say to this community. Don't let anyone convince you that you matter less in this world. If anything, you matter more. When everything is changing at once and no one fully has control, you are the ones who bring method to the madness. Someone has to decide which tools get trusted with which systems, where the guardrails sit, and what happens when an agent gets it wrong. That someone is you. IT has always been the first line of defense, the people the rest of the business turns to. That doesn't go away in the AI era. It gets louder. And you are still the answer to it.
There are unknowns, and we won't have all of them figured out. Some of the tools we'll rely on a year from now haven't been built yet. Some of today's best practices will look naive in hindsight. That's fine. Our job isn't to have every answer. It's to give people the confidence that we've got this, and to keep earning it one good decision at a time. Test things, share what you learn, and say so plainly when something isn't ready. That candor is how trust gets built when the ground keeps moving.
So let's not brace for AI like it's a threat. We've met every big shift before this one by learning it faster than anyone else in the building, and this one is no different. Let's take hold of it, and use it to make the world a little better.
Let's take hold of it, and use it to make the world a little better.
