My org wanted to host a CAD application on the AD server which was already running with max capacity with a hypervisor that was also used as a file server. 2005, I was called to restore data on an IBM AIX server. They already attempted restoring backup tapes. Except, no data was there. They went through all the tapes. They ended up having several people at dumb terminals..for months..rekeying data from paper copies of orders. (Nationwide distributor with a lot of transactions). Because of that incident, I was offered to take over all IT. Kicked out a couple different contract companies (Unix support, web dev, PC support). In the end, I had complete backups and recovery from 8 hours to 30 minutes using autoloader...that they already owned and only used for website). I also grew the tech as they expanded locations and invested in infrastructure. Always confirm your disaster plan works..before disaster actually strikes. ...read more ...read less

Back in 2010, an Enterprise client with no backups - I went onsite to deploy second array into the cluster for VMware Consolidated backups. Formatted first backup lun...then panic from IT department, everthing went offline. Yup, the old array had lun conflict and I'd just formatted a large production lun with too many production VM's running on it (and no backups). After several VERY stressful hours, a final risky attempt with fdisk expert mode and I managed to resurrect the lun and restore service. ...read more ...read less
